Switzerland is best seen through a train window, and this trip uses three of the country's most spectacular routes — the Glacier Express, Bernina Express, and GoldenPass. Start in Zurich, cruise Lake Lucerne, base in Interlaken between two alpine lakes, ride the cog railway up to Jungfraujoch (the Top of Europe at 3,454m), and end in Zermatt beneath the Matterhorn. The trains are the attraction as much as the destinations — the Glacier Express crosses 291 bridges and 91 tunnels in eight hours, the Bernina Express climbs to 2,253 metres and passes within a few metres of a glacier, and the GoldenPass runs a panoramic route through vineyards and lakes. This trip is built around riding all three.
Base towns are chosen for scenery rather than city convenience — Lucerne for the lake, Interlaken for the alpine betweenness, Zermatt for the Matterhorn. Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe at 3,454m, is a full-day affair with the Ice Palace and the Aletsch Glacier viewpoint. Everything is walkable, punctual, and pre-booked.

Afternoon: Return to Interlaken.
