Travel by bullet train with a Japan Rail Pass, stay in a mix of Western hotels and one traditional ryokan, and eat your way through izakayas, ramen counters, and kaiseki dinners.
The "Golden Route" is what Japanese travel agencies have recommended to first-time visitors for decades — Tokyo to Hakone to Kyoto to Osaka, with Nara as a day trip. It's a proven itinerary because it works: you see ancient and modern Japan in a single continuous arc, and the bullet train does the moving for you.
What we've added to the standard route: an overnight in a ryokan with a private onsen, a morning at the Tsukiji Outer Market before the crowds, an evening food walk through Osaka's Dotonbori, and a hands-on experience (choose from a tea ceremony, a calligraphy lesson, or a knife-sharpening demo at a Kyoto bladesmith).
Arrival: Land at Narita or Haneda Airport. Private transfer to your hotel in Shinjuku or Asakusa.
Evening: Gentle orientation walk in your neighbourhood. Try your first ramen at a local counter.
Overnight: Tokyo.
Morning: Breakfast at hotel. Guided Tokyo tour — Meiji Shrine, Harajuku's Omotesando, and Shibuya Crossing.
Late Morning: Visit the Tsukiji Outer Market for fresh sushi, tamagoyaki, and Japanese knives.
Afternoon: Explore Asakusa and Sens?-ji Temple, Tokyo's oldest temple. Wander Nakamise-dori for souvenirs.
Evening: Optional Tokyo Skytree or teamLab Borderless.
Overnight: Tokyo.
Morning: Breakfast and check out. Take the Romancecar or Shinkansen to Hakone.
Afternoon: Hakone Loop — mountain railway, ropeway over the volcanic valley, and Lake Ashi pirate ship cruise with Mount Fuji views (weather permitting).
Evening: Check into your ryokan. Kaiseki dinner served in your room. Evening soak in the private onsen.
Overnight: Hakone ryokan.
Morning: Traditional Japanese breakfast at the ryokan. Optional morning onsen.
Late Morning: Train to Kyoto (approx. 2 hours via Odawara).
Afternoon: Arrival in Kyoto. Check into your hotel. Orientation walk in Gion — the geisha district.
Evening: Free time. Optional Kaiseki dinner in Pontocho alley.
Overnight: Kyoto.
Morning: Breakfast at hotel. Guided Kyoto tour — Fushimi Inari Shrine with its 10,000 red torii gates, then Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion).
Afternoon: Choose your hands-on experience: tea ceremony, calligraphy lesson, or a visit to a traditional bladesmith in Kyoto.
Evening: Walk the Philosopher's Path at dusk. Dinner at leisure.
Overnight: Kyoto.
Morning: Breakfast at hotel. Train to Nara (45 minutes).
Late Morning: Visit T?dai-ji Temple with its giant bronze Buddha. Walk Nara Park where hundreds of wild deer bow for crackers.
Afternoon: Visit Kasuga Taisha Shrine with its lantern-lined paths. Return to Kyoto.
Evening: Free time in Kyoto.
Overnight: Kyoto.
Morning: Breakfast and check out. Train to Osaka (15 minutes).
Afternoon: Check in. Visit Osaka Castle and the Umeda Sky Building for sunset views.
Evening: Guided Osaka food walk through Dotonbori — takoyaki, okonomiyaki, kushikatsu, and street-side ramen. The Glico Running Man sign for the classic photo.
Overnight: Osaka.
Morning: Breakfast at hotel. Check out. Optional last stop at Kuromon Ichiba Market.
Transfer: Private transfer to Kansai International Airport (KIX).
